THE HISTORY OF U.S.A.T. LIBERTY SHIP

• 1915 Built in America as a cargo steamship about 400 ft. long. Armed for World War II with two artillery.
• 1942 Sunk January 1st about 1 mile Southwest of Lombok while carrying a cargo of raw rubber and railway parts. It was towed to Bali by U.S. destroyer but filled too much water to be carried to port. The crew was evacuated and it was beached at Tulamben. From 1942-1963 it was stripped of valuables, cargo, propeller, and metals.
• 1963 Mt. Agung erupted. Earth tremors cause the ship to shift into deeper waters breaking the hull in at least two places and causing the superstructure to fall into the deep.
• 1978 Becoming known as a good dive site.
• 1988 Now a popular dive site for visitors to Bali.
• 1993 The most popular dive site in Bali with 50-70 divers per day during season. Diving intensity in recent years has caused considerable damage to the marine life.

DIVE HINTS

This underwater guide showing the main points off shore will help you to find your way around. Much of the wreck can be seen from the surface. Part of the stern is in only 7 ft. and a lot more in 17 ft. This guide would also be helpful for snorkelers. However, the main attraction lies in the marine growth and the fish life (Some 400 species) (Best at bow 100 ft. -33 ft.)

This is a safe, easy dive. Go slow

• Relax and get comfortable at sites 1 OR 2.
• Keep your buoyancy correct as you descend.
• Keep your gauges in your pockets to avoid snags.
• Don't crowd together. This causes confusion and bumping.
• Fin gently.
• Don't attempt swimming in a tight formation.
